Rose McDougald was likely born of John McDougald<nocat> and Helena Aquin<nocat> on September 11, 1874. She married Lévi Ouellette on and mothered Dan, Florence (1912), and George Ouellette.[1][2] She presumably lived near Moose Creek, Ontario at least during Florence's baptism there circa 1914. According to a family group sheet, she died in 1942 and is buried in "West Cote De Neige Cemetary Montreal" (probably Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery).
Parentage and second marriage
Based on her son Hugh's<nocat> marriage record, her husband Levi died by 1927 or earlier. Therefore, Rose would have been widowed from that time on. In the marriage records for Alexandria there is a marriage listed on Jun 14, 1922 between a "Mrs. Rose Willard", a 55 year-old widow, and a bachelor named James Fletcher<nocat>. The bride's parents are Lena Jacques and John McDougald, and her birthplace is noted to be Alexandria, St-Raphael's parish. A civil record of their marriage shows there was a separate ceremony the year before, on September 10, 1921. In this record the brides parents are "John McDougall" and "Helena Aitken". Taken altogether, this evidence suggests that Levi was dead by this time and that Rose had remarried. It seems unlikely there was another woman named Rose McDougald who also married a man surnamed Willard and who was the same age.
The details of Mrs. Rose Willard's life match the timeline of Rose McDougald's life and explain the mystery surrounding the record of her marriage to Levi. She is listed as Marie Jacques, sharing the same surname with Mrs. Willard's mother. If Helena Jacques is her mother, it suggests her parents were not married at the time of her birth. Indeed, looking through the birth records of St-Raphael's, a child by the name "Rose" was baptised on September 25, 1874. The record states that she was born on the 11th of the month; no parents are listed and no witnesses were present at the baptism. This date is consistent with Rose's birth year in censuses and with Mrs. Willard's age.
The difference in her mother's surname in the civil and Catholic records is explainable by error and dit names. In the Glengarry and Stormont parish records people with the surname "Aquin" are sometimes listed with the dit name "Jacques". Therefore, if "Aitken" is taken to be a mistaken recording of "Aquin", the mystery surname change is solved.
